Stockholm’s Eritrean Cultural Festival Riots 2023 – Aftermath

Solna District Court in Stockholm, Capital City of Sweden will try 8 people in an aftermath to violent riots erupting at an Eritrean Cultural Festival in August 2023. The hearing is scheduled for March 10 – 12, 2025.

Thousands of migrants of Eritrean origin call Sweden home since the early 1970s. The festival in question, devoted to the cultural heritage of Eritrea is a recurring annual event that has been held since the 1990s, and has hitherto enjoyed a couple of decades of nostalgic annual Eritrean cultural get-together.

The forthcoming Court Hearings are a direct aftermath of the riots that rudely and violently brought the Augusti 2023 episode of the Eritrean Cultural Festival to an abrupt rude and violent conclusion.

A group allegedly protesting against the Eritrean Government stormed into the cultural festival in Stockholm and confronted the participants; some of whom were young children enjoying the fair while several elderly were also enjoying various activities pertaining to their roots.

The protesters used sticks and stones as weapons and also pelted the police officers with various forms of projectiles, while setting vehicles on fire.

During the clashes, at least 50 civilians and three police officers were injured while hundreds of people were arrested.
